If you have a dead lock or are considering a dead lock, you need to know about the following security advice.

Typical DeadLock

When you have a dead lock installed on your main doors, you are trying to keep unwanted guests out.  But, if you need to exit your home in a hurry what are you going to do?  Your Dead Lock will also keep you locked inside!  If you have an emergency, you need to find your keys and Unlock your Dead Lock so you can get out.  Many people have died in house fires because they could not get out of the house!  Many have been found collapsed at the front door! If an Intruder enters your house and your best defence is to escape, how are you going to do that when the keys are in the kitchen or worse in your handbag?

If you must have your door Dead Bolted while your in your home, make sure that a key is left in the lock for an emergency exit.

You may feel that this is careless on your behalf to leave the door with the Key in it.  But if an intruder who comes in through the window wants to leave via the front door, he or she is going to get fairly agitated when they can’t get out. They may turn and direct their frustration at you, causing you harm. Another example is the oubreak of fire in your home. If you are faced with a room full of smoke, your keys are the last thing you’ll probably find!
Another way to stay safe is to have a hook on the back of the door, or beside the door. Put your keys on the hook every time you enter your home. Get in the habit so your keys are always available. Having them on a hook in the Kitchen is pointless. Most fires start in or around the kitchen and access to your keys will be limited.

So don’t risk your own wellbeing and have a key either in the lock on the inside of the door or hanging within easy reach of the door lock for emergency exits!
